The shady side of Julia Roberts

 tháng 8 25, 2019     No comments

For a generous portion of her career, actress Julia Roberts was considered America's sweetheart. She shot to fame in the early '90s as the street-walking star of Pretty Woman. Her infectious, toothy grin and girl-next-door Southern charm won Hollywood's heart, but there is also a shady and less polished side to Roberts that isn't often discussed in the media. The actress herself has admitted to making mistakes in the past, telling Harper's Bazaar in 2017 that "I was my priority, a selfish little brat running around making films." And with that, here are some controversial moments that have tarnished Robert's silver screen crown.

Julia Roberts reportedly hooked up with her ex's friend

In 1991, Julia Roberts was set to marry Kiefer Sutherland, who was quite the stud in his pre-Jack Bauer years. She called off the engagement just three days before the nuptials. According to the New York Daily News, Roberts allegedly thought her fiancé was cheating on her with a stripper. What's so wrong about a bride-to-be shutting down a wedding due to fidelity concerns? Nothing.

It was what Julia Roberts did immediately after she ended the relationship that makes you go hmm. According to People, she fled to Ireland and sought comfort from actor Jason Patric, a friend of Sutherland. On the eve of what would have been her wedding day, she went to a photo shoot reportedly wearing a "Notre Dame baseball cap suspiciously identical to the one worn around town by Patric." Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Julia Roberts broke Lyle Lovett's heart

Julia Roberts married oddly coifed country singer Lyle Lovett in 1993. They swapped vows after a three-week courtship, and she even went barefoot at their wedding. The odd couple seemed to share a sweet romance, or so it seemed on the surface. Imagine everyone's surprise when, just 21 months later, the pair issued a brief statement to announce its separation: "We remain close and in great support of each other."

The timing was terrible, and it seemed like Lovett got the short end of the stick. Roberts was in London shooting Mary Reilly, while Lovett was in Houston recovering from a motorcycle accident. (That doesn't sound like "great support" on Roberts' part.) Though the statement was a joint affair, fans felt like a doting Lovett had been put out to pasture as his wife's fame soared. Not long before the breakup, he'd talked happily about trying to start a family when Roberts finished filming — an idea that seemed unrealistic considering he also told People they had never spent seven straight days together.

Did Roberts wear a shady T-shirt to target her man's ex-wife?

That infamous baseball cap isn't the only time Julia Roberts has been accused of throwing shade with her fashion choices. She reportedly started dating now-husband Danny Moder in 2000, while Moder was still married to his first wife, makeup artist Vera Steimberg. In 2001, Roberts was spotted traipsing around in full view of paparazzi wearing a T-shirt that read "A Low Vera." That photo reportedly didn't sit well with Moder's family. A source told People that Moder's father was perturbed by Roberts' seemingly petty sartorial selection, especially since Steimberg was close with Moder's family.

Roberts never expressed remorse for that notorious outfit. She later told Oprah Winfrey, "I stand by my shirt," pointing the finger at the tabloid press who "dramatize these things until there's a state of frenzy. People see frenzy and they go, 'What?' Then they clamor toward the frenzy. We all do it. It's a primal, natural response." Was that an intellectual moment or just another sick burn — perhaps one requiring some soothing A Low Vera? (Sorry, we couldn't resist.)

Julia Roberts allegedly spun her breakup with Benjamin Bratt to hurt him
Life & Style reported that not only did Julia Roberts pursue married Danny Moder "in a big way," but she supposedly dropped her four-year relationship with actor Benjamin Bratt to go after the cameraman. She allegedly took the shade up a notch by spinning the press in her favor.

The Bratt breakup was "a lot nastier than anyone ever knew," an insider told the National Enquirer. "They accused each other of cheating, and Ben finally said he'd had enough. Julia has always said she walked out on him, but it was the other way around. And Julia claimed she ended the relationship because he couldn't commit. That had Ben seeing red. He was the one who wanted to settle down and start a family, but Julia refused." Ouch.

Did she play publicity games to improve her 'homewrecker' image?

Rumor has it that Julia Roberts allegedly didn't take much issue with pursuing Danny Moder while he was married to then-wife Vera Steimberg, but the A-list actress supposedly did worry about her reputation taking a hit because of it. Take all this with a huge helping of salt, but according to Radar Online, Roberts may have offered Steimberg $100,000 to divorce Moder. The tabloid also claimed that Moder's sister kept a diary while in rehab that accused Roberts of destroying her brother's marriage and fracturing the family.

Needless to say, an insider told Life & Style that Roberts was mortified by the "homewrecker" label with which she'd been slapped, calling it "an absolute PR disaster." Some sources claimed Roberts' focus on family life and charity work was born of a desire to combat her portrayal in the press as some sort of villainous minx. "Being as down-to-earth and unHollywood as possible has made Hollywood embrace her again," one insider said.

Julia Roberts was nicknamed 'Tinkerhell'

When Steven Spielberg directed Hook, he cast Julia Roberts as the magical fairy Tinkerbell in the Peter Pan adaptation. By the time the credits rolled, she'd been nicknamed "Tinkerhell." The handle spread like wildfire, and this was back in 1991, before social media and all things viral! During an interview on 60 Minutes, Spielberg was asked about Roberts' professionalism. He replied, "It was an unfortunate time for us to work together."

Roberts never grew out of that reputation, despite playing nice in nearly every interview about it. "Hand to God: not a thing I read about that was truthful, and it really hurt my feelings," she told Vanity Fair. Regarding Spielberg's comments, she said, "I couldn't believe that this person that I knew and trusted was actually hesitating to come to my defense. It was a hard lesson to learn. It was the first time that I felt I had a turncoat in my midst." As they say, heavy is the head that wears the crown.

Jim Carrey's tragic real-life story

 tháng 8 25, 2019     No comments

Jim Carrey's wild personality, kooky facial expressions, and outlandish sense of humor have been making the world chuckle since the '80s. After snagging a gig on The Tonight Show at the age of 21, he parlayed his newfound success into a recurring spot on the '90s sketch comedy show In Living Color. He tickled our funny bones as he depicted memorable characters, such as Fire Marshall Bill and the buff bodybuilder Vera de Milo, and it was clear as day that Carrey had no limit to how far he would go to bring laughter into his fans' lives.

Box office success soon followed, with movies such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Dumb and Dumber, but despite his accomplishments, he has struggled with inner turmoil that manifested itself during his childhood and wreaked havoc in his life well into his adult years. This is the tragic real-life story of Jim Carrey.

He grew up terrified that the Grim Reaper would come for his parents

Jim Carrey grew up grappling with a fear that his parents, who were "heavy smokers" weren't going to survive. "I remember locking myself in the bathroom and crying because I thought they were going to die. They banged on the door, telling me to come out. I don't know if I got over that fear at that time; it was just kind of with me," he told The Hollywood Reporter. His fears heightened as his mom freely talked about her own mortality. "I remember being seven years old and my mother at the dinner table saying things like, 'My brain is deteriorating at an incredible rate!' or 'My angina's acting up; I could go at any time!'" he recalled. "Things like that would just shake me to the core."

Those tragic childhood circumstances inspired Carrey to pen 2013 children's book, How Roland Rolls, which tackles some of the serious topics that affect young people. "One of the things I've always wanted to talk about or deal with is the fact that kids have profound feelings and profound questions that people don't give them credit for. They think about life and death and 'What happens when something happens to Mom? What happens when something happens to me?'"

Carrey eventually came to grips with his mom's outspoken banter, realizing it was her way of "getting attention and getting love," — but it was at the cost of scaring the bejesus out of him.

Carrey dropped out of school to support his impoverished family

At the age of 10, Carrey wrote a heartfelt letter to The Carol Burnett Show in hopes of showing off his "150 voices" on the program. He waited for a reply and was finally greeted with a rejection letter from the TV personality, who told him the program was "just grown-ups" and encouraged Carrey to "stay in school, study hard."

Sadly, Carrey wasn't able to heed her advice after his father lost his job as an accountant. In order to help his family make ends meet, the Bruce Almighty star dropped out of school on his 16th birthday, according to CBS News. "We were experiencing poverty at that point. We all got a job, where the whole family had to work as security guards and janitors." There was a bright side to his early exit from school. Carrey was determined not to be a looo-hoo-zuh-her, so he spent his time away from the classroom working on his comedy act "full-time." And, boy, did that pay off.

His mirror was his only friend

Jim Carrey also dealt with bouts of loneliness as a child, which he described in a December 1984 issue of Interview magazine. When asked if his childhood was unusual in any sort of way, he made the startling admission: "Well, I spent most of my time in my room staring at a mirror. I never knew I was supposed to socialize," he said. He went on to say that he would spend "hours" making faces at himself in front of the mirror, but he described the memory in a nostalgic way by claiming he was just "having a good time."

While chatting with James Lipton on Inside the Actors Studio (via the Daily Mail), the Liar Liar actor shared more secrets about his life of solitude, but he hinted that his aversion to being a social butterfly may have been self-imposed. After dropping out of school, he said he went from being a "straight-A student to not wanting to know anybody's name, and not wanting to make a friend."

Carrey's family was homeless and lived in a van

The Carrey family's financial hardships meant tough times were abundant. The comedian revealed in an interview with Inside the Actors Studio (via People), that he and his family even had to live "in a van for a while."

However, Jim Carrey managed to turn those difficult times into a source of laughter: "A lot of people don't know this but when I was about 14 or 15, my father lost his job and I actually became homeless for quite some time, but of course, I grew up in Canada and I thought we'd gone camping," he says in one of his earlier comedy skits. Thankfully, those difficult days are now over, and Carrey has used his fortunes to give his lifestyle a complete 180, like the time he purchased a beachside Malibu home that he later sold for a whopping $13.4 million. Cha-ching!

He killed at The Comedy Store ... but not in the good way

During The Hollywood Reporter's June 2019 roundtable chat with other Hollywood comedy legends, Jim Carrey revealed a particularly tragic evening he endured as a fledgling stand-up comic. Describing a disastrous set at Los Angeles' famous Comedy Store as "an exercise in self-punishment and punishment for [the audience]," Carrey said he refused to leave the stage "for two hours" even though the crowd hated him so much that audience members literally threw chairs.

"I finally got offstage to huge applause just because I mentioned I was going to leave the stage," Carrey said, adding, "Then I crawled through the audience on my hands and knees, popped up behind the piano and started banging on the keys, singing, 'I hate you all, you gave me cancer.'" The 250-person crowd didn't love that either, and all but five people supposedly walked out. Though Carey was clearly working through some issues and was the antagonist in the situation, he left the show feeling devastated. "I got in the car and I cried all the way home," he said, "Because I don't want to make people unhappy."

Jim Carrey has suffered from depression

In an interview with CNN's Larry King, Jim Carrey described himself as a "weird, serious person," and he dove deeper into that topic when he chatted with iNews. His "serious" personality isn't one the public gets to see often, and it could be attributed to the actor's struggle with depression. He revealed that it took him some time, but he was able to get to a point where he was "sometimes happy."

After gradually ditching Prozac, abstaining from alcohol and drugs, and limiting his coffee intake, Carrey found that his mental wellness improved. To keep depression at bay, he looked toward the spiritual side of his life. "Jesus. I'm a Buddhist, I'm a Muslim, I'm a Christian. I'm whatever you want me to be," he told 60 Minutes. "It all comes down to the same thing … You are either in a loving place, or you are in an unloving place. If you are with me right now, you cannot be unhappy. It's not possible, just try."

He became 'obsessed' with art to mend his 'broken heart'

We've seen Jim Carrey hit up the red carpet with a bevy of beautiful women, but one of his most well-known relationships was with fellow actress and comedienne Jenny McCarthy. After five years together, the couple announced its breakup. "Those moments where you saw us together, was it love? You're damned right it was," McCarthy told Oprah Winfrey in September 2010. "The problem is there wasn't a photographer when the times were rough."

After going their separate ways, Carrey turned to art as a form of therapy. In the documentary, Jim Carrey: I Needed Color, he said painting and creating clay sculptures helped him "heal a broken heart." Although he didn't mention McCarthy by name, the timeline of their breakup coincided with his foray into the art world. "When I really started painting a lot, I had become so obsessed that there was nowhere to move in my home. Paintings were everywhere, they were becoming part of the furniture. I was eating on them," he said.

He's been called 'a hard guy to date'

Jim Carrey has had a long list of leading women in and out of his life. He married actress Melissa Womer in 1987, and they had a daughter, Jane, before they went their separate ways. He married his Dumb and Dumber co-star, Lauren Holly, in 1996, but she filed for divorce in July 1997. A string of rocky relationships followed, including a broken engagement to his Me, Myself & Irene co-star Renée Zellweger (pictured).

After news broke that his aforementioned romance with Jenny McCarthy was on the skids, those close to the actor spoke out about Carrey's relationship style in unflattering terms. One source labeled the comedian "a hard guy to date," telling People that "Jim can run hot and he can run cold. He is someone who desperately needs to be with someone, then just as desperately needs to be alone. But at the same time, he can be a very loving, very compassionate guy."

So it turns out doing this one thing before shampooing will give you the glossiest hair ever

 tháng 4 09, 2019     No comments

You may see washing your hair as a quick 3 minute in-out job. Chuck on some shampoo, rinse, lather on the conditioner, rinse – job done right? Not quite. It turns out the secret to healthy, shiny locks is in a few simple but essential steps that we’ve been missing out on. We caught up with some of the best hairdressers in the business to discover the best hacks that’ll make every day a good hair day.

APPLY AN OIL *BEFORE* YOU SHAMPOO

Whilst most of us just go straight in with a shampoo, Paul Windle from Windle & Moodie, says that's where we've been going wrong.
The hair supremo has a genius pre-shampoo hack that'll give you the glossiest hair of your life.
Paul swears by applying a special elixir before shampooing to help repair hair and give it some serious gloss, which is exactly why he developed the Essential Oils Elixir, £30. Handy.
"This treatment serves to deeply nourish, repair and boost shine in one simple step before shampooing," Paul explained. "It is specifically designed to target dry, damaged and colour-treated hair for a glamorous and ultra-soft style."
The pre-shampoo treatment is formulated with apricot, coconut, camellia and oat oils, making it super nourishing. The 98% natural oil formula apparently provides a long-lasting sheen - we tried it and can attest it works. All you need to do is twist and massage the oil into your hair, and leave it for 15 minutes before shampooing.
Who knew achieving glossy hair could be so easy?
Now you've sorted your pre-shampoo treatments, Holly Willoughby's hairdresser, Ciler Peksah, at a Soap & Glory launch, has shared her top hair washing hacks.
SECTION THE HAIR
A lot of people just pump, pump, pump and then put shampoo and conditioner directly onto the hair but you actually need to section it into four strands, then rotate each section of the hair. This will help stimulate the scalp.

WASH THE BACK OF YOUR HEAD
A lot of people don’t wash the back of their head properly. It’s very important to move the hair around. If you just let the water run down and don’t move the hair around, you’ll get build-up resulting in an irritated scalp and itchiness behind the ears.

I started using a clarifying shampoo and couldn't believe what happened to my hair

WASH THE HAIRLINE
Sometimes people say "my hair’s not gross but my hairline is really greasy". This is because when we wear makeup or apply face cream, it goes directly onto our hairline, which causes grease to build-up.
DOUBLE SHAMPOO AND USE TWO DIFFERENT SHAMPOOS
If you’re washing your hair twice a week, you can double shampoo. Just make sure to use a cleansing shampoo followed by a moisturising one because you need something more nourishing. A person who washes their hair every day should just do one shampoo and condition.

Here's what the experts think on whether you really need to wash your hair twice
SHAMPOO

Here's what the experts think on whether you really need to wash your hair twice

LEAVE CONDITIONER IN
As long as you’ve jet washed the scalp and rinsed really well on top, don’t stress about completely rinsing the conditioner from the length. The hair on top is always going to be shiny and healthy because it’s in the roots but the length is old so leaving a bit of conditioner or mask in the length helps give nourishment throughout the day. When I’m on holiday and my hair is so dry, I even use conditioner as a styling product.

OR SWAP CONDITIONER FOR A MASK
Cleansing shampoos strip the nourishment from your hair so I use a mask as my conditioner. It really feeds in moisture in a way that conditioner does not.

5 Bad habits you need to break if you want clear skin

 tháng 3 24, 2019     No comments

I spent many years trying to figure out how to heal my acne, and I eventually made a career out helping women who have the same struggle.
A lot of things that can contribute to acne, and the last thing you want to do is make the problem worse. Unfortunately, I see a lot of people do just that without realizing it.

Using too many products

Many people think acne is a topical problem, so they rely solely on topical products. Products can help, but more doesn’t mean better.
Acne-prone skin is often sensitive to products and ingredients. The more you use, the more breakouts you’re likely to cause.
My tip: Keep to the basics. Use a gentle cleanser, a toner and a simple moisturizer. Use a spot treatment on occasion, and try to find products with as few ingredients as possible.

Constantly using harsh products

Still clinging to a topical solution, many people use harsh, aggressive products to fight acne.
Unfortunately, many of these products can cause inflammation in the skin, which triggers acne. These products leave skin vulnerable and less able to fight infection, and some products potentially causes as much acne as it treats.
My tip: Use milder products that promote healing, and save anything aggressive for occasional spot treatment.

Over-exfoliating

The upper layer of your skin protects your skin and maintains the water and oil balance. Constantly stripping away that outer layer can lead to skin vulnerability, irritation and inflammation — which won’t help your acne.
My tip: Exfoliate no more than twice a week if you use a buffing exfoliator. If using a product that chemically exfoliates — such as with enzymes — use it for a few weeks, then take a week off. Always be extremely gentle if you have active acne.

Picking

Popping pimples has a lot of potential problems — and zero benefits.
The pore is already in a very delicate state, so popping it is likely to cause more damage and increase the likelihood of scarring. You may rupture the pore lining, pushing that “gunk” into the bloodstream, making the infection worse and irritating other pores around it. You could also permanently damage the pore opening, resulting in a larger pore that is more likely to have problems in the future.
My tip: Whenever you feel the urge to pop, try distracting yourself and doing something else with your hands. No joke, I used to kept bubble wrap in my bathroom so I could pop it instead of my pimples!

Analyzing every pore on your face

Another common habit for those with acne is constantly looking over every inch of skin. It’s the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing before going to bed.
You may think it’s helpful trying to decide if your skin is better or worse, counting how many new pimples showed up, debating if that pimple on your chin is bigger — but it’s not.
Over-analyzing your skin can create stress and anxiety, and stress leads to breakouts. So in a way, by constantly paying attention to your acne, you’re keeping it there.
My tip: Set a timer when you go into the bathroom that gives you just enough time to wash up. You’ll be less likely to hang around the mirror and analyze your skin. If you cannot resist the urge, seriously consider covering the bathroom mirror for a while. I had to do that!
Breaking these habits and following my suggestions will go a long way in letting your skin heal and prevent you from sabotaging your skin care efforts.

What really happens when you sleep in makeup?

 tháng 3 18, 2019     No comments

You don't need a degree in dermatology to realize that sleeping with your makeup on is a horrible idea. It's not good for your skin or your sheets. You might think, It's late. I'm tired. What's the harm of crashing out without washing my face just this once? Well, it causes more harm than you might think. Going to be bed without washing your face is bad news and can have a cumulative harmful effect. Here's the icky stuff that happens to your skin, your lashes, and beneath the surface when you nix removing your makeup before bedtime.

Pores get clogged

Sleeping with makeup on is murder on your pores. "Going to bed with makeup on will leave you with clogged pores, since so many makeup [products] have ingredients like silicones that block the pores," Debra Jalman, a New York City-based, board-certified dermatologist and author of Skin Rules: Trade Secrets From A Top New York Dermatologist, tells me. "When the pores are blocked, your skin gets bumpy. If you are acne-prone, it can even lead to breakouts." You are effectively damaging skin by neglecting to remove makeup at the end of the day.

You get acne

Beverly Hills dermatologist Dr. Harold Lancer points to the fact that our skin never stops working, just like our hearts never stop beating. He tells me, "Just like our internal organs, our skin is always at work. Skin is made up of water, protein, lipids, and different minerals and chemicals. Skin is also covered in pores, which allow us to sweat and secrete sebum, a natural lubricant that moisturizes skin and removes dead skin cells and other irritants from our pores. When you apply makeup, you block your pores from releasing sebum, which may lead to visibly larger pores and acne overtime."

Dr. J. Matthew Knight of FAAD Knight Dermatology Institute also notes that "the mechanical pressure of your face on a pillow can grind makeup into hair follicles, leading to clogged pores acne." Losing a few minutes of shut eye in favor making use of some cold cream and face wash doesn't seem like such a hassle when you think of it from that perspective, does it?

You damage skin cells

Skin cells are also damaged by the practice of sleeping in makeup. Dr. Knight sums it up best, saying, "Makeup can trap environmental pollutants and free-radicals that can damage skin cells, including collagen, leading to premature skin aging." So not only does crashing out with your concealer on ultimately clog pores and lead to zits, but it can also speed up the aging process. Ack.

Your skin becomes dull

Dewy, glowing, soft, and smooth skin is usually a desired trait. Dull, sallow, or parched skin is not. If you use a makeup product, like a highlighter, to impart some peachy pink glow, that's great. But sleeping in it can cause the opposite effect. "Our skin is the largest organ of our body and it performs vital functions for our body, like secreting sweat, excreting lipids, healing wounds and heat regulation," New York-licensed esthetician and makeup artist Liz Donat tells me.

"So it is imperative that we cleanse and exfoliate it regularly and we especially do not sleep in our makeup! Clogged pores and blackheads, aka comedones, are formed when dead skin cells, oil and makeup get trapped in the pores and suffocate the skin," she continued. "These clogged pores are the pre-cursor to acne-like breakouts and make the skin look dull and lifeless." That's reason enough to reach for a makeup remover wipe or a washcloth, no matter how late it is or no matter how tired you are.

You interfere with the reparatory process

Our bodies regenerate while we are at rest. The same holds true for our skin. Lancer says, "Skin repairs itself while we sleep, so taking off your makeup at night is important because it allows your pores to release sebum that rehydrates and protects your skin from free radicals in the air." If you leave makeup on, it disrupts these critical processes.

You set yourself back

As stated, when you sleep, skin regenerates and heals itself. One night of sleeping with makeup on can and will disrupt the delicate balance of your skin and set you back. Dermatologist Dr. Kathy Taghipour of Savana Urban Spa tells me, "When you sleep, your skin regenerates. When your pores are blocked, your skin can't breathe, and thus it can't regenerate. The oil in your pores build-up and transform itself into a bacteria, which can lead to various skin problems. After a night with your makeup on, your skin will need about a week to restore its previous condition and to balance again everything." A whole week? It's not worth it. Take that makeup off, people!

Whatever happened to the girl from Dirty Dancing?

 tháng 3 18, 2019     No comments

You may have first seen her in Red Dawn or Ferris Bueller's Day Off, but there's no denying that Jennifer Grey's most iconic role is Frances "Baby" Houseman in 1987's Dirty Dancing. Now more than 30 years old, the beloved movie is a favorite of people of all ages and, despite its 1960s setting, somehow feels truly timeless. Although a 2017 television remake tried to capture some of that charm, it was ultimately a flop. While Abigail Breslin did her best to channel Baby, many were left wondering what happened to the original Baby after all these years. So just what has Jennifer Grey been up to since carrying that watermelon? We've got the answers!

She was in a car accident with Matthew Broderick

Even if you remember that Grey played Matthew Broderick's sister in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, you may not remember that she was also in a relationship with Broderick. Even more under the radar, then, is the fact that Grey and Broderick were in a serious car accident just before Dirty Dancing was released. While on vacation in Ireland, the pair were in a rented car when Broderick (who was driving) collided head on with another driver, killing two people.

While Grey only suffered bumps and bruises externally, the accident left her with emotional scars. "I became America's sweetheart within five days of the accident," she told People in 2010. "The juxtaposition of that deep sorrow, the survivor's guilt … and then being celebrated as the new big thing just didn't jibe. It didn't feel good to be the toast of the town."

So Grey didn't relish her newfound fame like she likely would have otherwise, choosing instead to take a bit of a step back. "The impact was emotional and physical," she said in the People interview. "My body was never the same, my head was never the same, my ambition was never the same."

She was in Bloodhounds of Broadway with Madonna

While Grey didn't embrace her Dirty Dancing fame the way she might have if not for the accident, she did take on another silver screen role when she starred alongside Madonna and Matt Dillon in Bloodhounds of Broadway in 1989. While Grey's performance was met with mixed reviews (Variety said she did "a good job"), the film was met with overall negative reviews (with The New York Times noting that it "never gets going"). But if nothing else, Grey's duet with Madonna showed audiences that not only could she dance, she could also sing.

She dated Johnny Depp

After her relationship with Matthew Broderick, Grey was linked to another Hollywood actor. After A Nightmare on Elm Street, but before Cry Baby and Edward Scissorhands, none other than Johnny Depp wooed Grey. While they were only together for a year, and famously only appeared in a single photograph together, the two were actually engaged during their short romance. Given the current state of Depp's personal and financial life, we'd say the actress probably dodged a bullet. (Add that to things we never thought we'd say a couple of years ago.)

She got a nose job

While 1989 might have been the year she was in a movie with Madonna as well as the year she was engaged to Johnny Depp, it wasn't all positive. It was also the year she got the nose job that changed everything. Well, sort of. It was 1989 when Grey got her first nose job, a decision that People notes was a choice that perhaps "most ambitious people would not have made" as it "radically altered her appearance" in the long run. But that could have been because fame wasn't really what Grey was after, with the impact of the car accident with Broderick still lingering. "I really felt like I wanted to be a wife and a mom," she told People, but her acting days were not yet over.
